It's not so much an article in the current issue of LFI but mentioned in part of an interview with Stefan Daniel about the products to come in 2006 and beyond. The section about the digital M is:
"LFI: Does 35mm photography, i.e., the orginal 'Leica Format', even have a digital future? What with the digital M, which you've announced for photokina 2006 look like?
Stefan Daniel: The digital M will basically maintain the size and the weight of a classic M, consisting of the same, high-quality materials and featuring the time-honoured optical rangefinder. In other words, it will remain an M, just without film. Of course, we had to solve the problem with the traditional cloth blind practically filling the entire M body, and since we wanted the digital M to maintain the same volume, we'll provice it with a metal-blade focal plane shutter.
Beyond that the digital M will have a focal length crop factor of 1.33. This technical constraint is necessary because our top priority is to deliver the utmost picture quality. Given the optical reality of M lenses and today's state of sensor technology, the ideal solution for our customers, a full-format sensor, would not live up to our high standards. This is particularly true for aspects such as vignetting and sharpness from image centre to corner. In this respect we've already reduced the thickness of the cover glass and filters located before the sensor to an absolute minimum so that laterally impacting light rays do not cause unwanted calculations. The radius of the micro lenses and their positioning before the sensor was designed in such a way that they channel as much light onto the pixel as possible. These measures and others ensure the picture quality that one has come to expect from the M system. The crop factor was selected so that the same picture angles are maintained - all one has to do is take a different lens: a 21mm turns intoa 28mm, a 28 into a 35. Having considered our options we are convinced that this is the best solution, in terms of attainable picture quality and - since the costs of a sensor increase exponentially to their size - in terms of the price of a digital M.
LFI: Consequently there would be a gap in the wide-angle department. Did you consider expanding the lens palette correspondingly?
SD: Indeed. We want to present the digital M from the start as a complete package. Therefore, we will be introducing it together with attractive wide-angle solutions. These will be compatible with both digital and analogue camera bodies - in the future this will hold true for all of our lens developments."
Which is good news for those of us with film M's who would love more wide-angle options, with or without a digital body.
Pentax are expanding their lens production capabilities in Vietnamდა ვიღაცა ამბობდა ჩინეთში ტეხავსო by building a new factory. The current factory has a production area of 6700 sq m (total area of 8800 sq m?) and the new factory will have a production area of 6000 sq m. The new factory should be completed by October 2006.
This will allow Pentax to increase its lens production capability from 1 million units per month to 1.6 million units per month.
One of the main reasons sited for this production capacity increase was the anticipated increase of demand for interchangeable lenses for DSLRs. Pentax will also increase the number of staff it employs.
Note that the current plant also produces lenses for CCTV cameras, camera phones and P&S cameras with the last two being a recent addition to the facilities output. This explains the need to increase production capacity from 1 million units per month.

Pixel counting joins film in obsolete bin
If you work in the camera industry, February is an exciting month.
That's when you head down to Florida for the annual Photo Marketing Association convention, where your company will unveil its latest camera models, thus making the ones everybody got for Christmas obsolete.
But this February is more exciting than most. Big changes are in the photographic air.
First, there's the astonishing collapse of the film camera market. By some tallies, 92 percent of all cameras sold are now digital. Big-name camera companies are either exiting the film business (Kodak, Nikon) or exiting the camera business altogether (Konica Minolta). Film photography is rapidly becoming a special-interest niche.
Next, there's the end of the megapixel race. "In compact cameras, I think that the megapixel race is pretty much over," says Chuck Westfall, director of media for Canon's camera marketing group. "Seven- and eight-megapixel cameras seem to be more than adequate. We can easily go up to a 13-by-19 print and see very, very clear detail."
That's a shocker. After 10 years of hearing how they need more, more, more megapixels, are consumers really expected to believe that eight megapixels will be the end of the line?
Well, we'll see. But if the age of megapixel insecurity is really over, what will motivate us to buy a new camera every couple of years?
Now, trying to predict the future of technology is a fool's game. But if you study enough trends and interview enough camera company executives, you get some tantalizing ideas of what's in the labs right now. Here's a tour of what you may be seeing in digital cameras, presented in a sequence of more and more distant horizons.

DIWA members from Europe and America continuously test and review digital imaging products for their readers. For digital cameras, more than 200 details must be checked, tested and evaluated. Then, each review is carefully monitored and compared by DIWA to ensure error-free, reliable and comprehensive test results.
Top ranked products will receive DIWA Awards in the value of gold, silver or bronze, based on summarized average scores. At the end of each year, one of the gold winners from each of the three digital camera categories is selected by the members as the best of the best, honoured by a ”DIWA Platinum Award”.
For 2005, the DIWA group of experts has decided the following digital cameras to be worthy winners of these awards:
Nikon D50: DIWA Platinum Award 2005 for ”Best Digital System Camera” The competition in this prestigious product category has become extremely fierce during 2005. Many new models, both in the low-end and high-end market segment have raised the overall quality level to new heights. At the same time, prices have dropped considerably, making professional-like cameras available to a much wider public. A major contributor to this development was the Nikon D50, which proved that professional image quality may be achieved also in a budget-friendly camera. In many respects, the D50 matches many of it’s considerably higher priced rivals, using the same Nikkor range of lenses that any other Nikon D-SLR. 6 Megapixel image sensor, fast response and stable, reliable automatic or manual controls make the Nikon D50 a wise choice for photo connoisseurs with limited financial funds.
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ30: DIWA Platinum Award 2005 for ”Best Advanced Digital Camera” In team with one of the most renowned lens manufacturers in the world, Leica, the Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras meet the competition with confidence. The FZ30 is solid evidence of that. Reviewers from all over the world have praised the camera for its high quality and fast 12x Leica DC Vario-Elmarit zoom lens, plus a number of qualities normally associated with high ranked traditional camera brands. The DIWA Platinum Award is the ultimate proof of a user-friendly designed “mega-zoom” camera, indisputable 8 MP image quality, as well as full automatic, semi-automatic or manual controls. The FZ30 suits a wide range of users, from the dedicated wildlife watcher to the ambitious photo enthusiast. Considering the contents of this fairly compact package, it also comes with a very modest price tag.
Fujifilm FinePix F10 : Platinum Award 2005 for ”Best Digital Amateur Camera” The F10 receives the DIWA Platinum Award for 2005 as the best gold winning camera in its category of “Digital Compact Cameras”. DIWA camera testing experts have concluded that Fujifilm must have paid extra attention to public demands and wishes when designing the F10. Not only is it a beautifully designed camera in a robust metal casing, it is also comfortably small with a 3x zoom lens and a huge 2.5” LCD screen with instant full brightness control. Unlike most mini-compacts, it also features a comfortable, elevated grip for improved security feeling, as well as several other user-friendly and useful features. The core technology responsible for the F10’s success is the 6.3 Megapixel Super CCD image sensor delivering low-noise images even at high sensitivity, a perfect combination for sharp, blur-free images in dark surroundings and extended range for the built-in flash. All in all, great value for money.
